Cholesterol has made our life tasteless. Many of the tasty dishes are extinct from our personal menu. Should we be concerned so much about cholesterol? Is it life threatening? A man in his fifties entered the clinic slightly limping. He looked like a gentleman with a good stature. “Doctor! I am suffering with arthritis since 10 years, underwent many treatments. I found to have been suffering from Arthritis with eroded bones in the joints as diagnosed by a senior orthopedic surgeon.” Doctor inspected him; found that there is a mild swelling around his knee joints with no obvious redness. Patient continued, “I underwent arthroscopy, and all other relevant investigations. Even I followed all the medications suggested by doctors.” Doctor interrupted, “please tell me about your profession” “I am a director in a food research and processing firm”. “Ok, did you find any relief from the medications you have been taking?” “Yes indeed but, when I stop the medication, it starts paining again” Doctor inspected that only larger joints like knee, ankle, elbow and wrist were affected. “Which are all the joints paining?” doctor asked anticipating the answers about larger joints. “I have pain in my knees, ankles, elbow and wrist and recently started with generalized body ache also.” “Ok, explain me about your daily routine” “I wake up at around 5:00 am, take a cup of green tea, go for a walk for about half an hour, return back and take bath, I take sprouted cereals as my breakfast and a cup of warm milk then I start to my office. I take a bowl of two chapattis and a bowl of rice and sambar/rasam and curd for my lunch. In evening I take a bowl of sprouted cereals and a cup of green tea as evening snacks, I go for a regular sports activity like badminton. Later I watch TV, spend some time with my family and take two chapattis and sabji for my dinner and go to bed at around 10.30 pm.” “Why do you take sprouted cereals as breakfast and evening snacks?” doctor asked curiously. “You know doctor; I work in a food research and processing firm. I know little bit about nutritious food. Sprouted cereals are very nourishing, they contain lots of proteins and produce only convenient calories” “you better stop that sir!” doctor said. “But why?!?” “because they are the reasons for your illness” Sprouted cereals are considered as reason for the painful conditions of joints. Also, in the above said case, taking any food and soon after indulging in any physical activity can also lead to generalized body ache, indigestion etc. Let us follow a disciplined food habit with respect to time, accustomed food and freshly prepared. Suddenly involving in any unusual or unaccustomed food would not help us. A food habit of another geographical area may not be suitable in our area. People tend to adopt some kind of different food habit all of a sudden. Corn flakes, oats as regular diet, olive oil instead of our regular coconut oil etc just because it is justified in some of magazine’s health coloumn. Let us understand that our regular homemade food is most suitable for us in maintaining our health. Sudden shift in our food which is unaccustomed may not help us. Known traditional foods are healthier than new fads. Your doctor or dietician would have a last say, in preserving your healthy.
