A 42-year-old housewife, Reema, (Name changed)came to the clinic and started complaining of pain and discomfort during bowel movements and occasional bleeding through anus. She was suffering from these complaints since two years. She wanted relief. After taking detailed history and examination, she was diagnosed as a case of piles. I advised her Diet changes, Life style modifications and prescribed few medicines and told her she need to take it for minimum three to four months. I called her for followup at regular interval.
Now a days, many people like Reema are suffering from piles which causes itching, pain, discomfort and bleeding from anal region. Many times people consult doctors and take symptomatic treatment for 10 to 15 days and as soon as gets temporary relief they just forget it.
After few days of relief again they suffer from same sort of discomfort. This time they either change the doctor or opt for hearsay home remedies without much seriousness obviously to suffer from pain and discomfort again and again.
This pain and discomfort due to piles can be disappeared from patient’s life if it is correctly and timely understood and treated.
What is piles
Basically Piles, also called as Hemorrhoids, are swollen and inflamed veins in anus and lower rectum. It is of two types – internal piles (located inside the rectum) and external piles (under the skin around the anus)
Piles are mainly due to straining during bowel movements or increased pressure on veins around anus. These veins tend to stretch under pressure and gets bulged or swollen which causes pain, sometimes gets ruptured and causes bleeding.
Main reason for it is constipation which is caused by our modern life style like eating fast and junk foods (Low-fiber diet), less physical activity and Long hours of sitting.
Ayurveda for piles
In Ayurveda, Piles has been explained as Arshas. Its treatment described as AHAR A(Diet), VIHARA (Life style) and AUSHADHI (Medicines)
- AHARA (Diet): mainly to prevent constipation, high-fiber diet and diet rich in green leafy vegetables and fruits
- VIHAR (Life style): Adequate physical activity and avoid prolonged sitting.
- AUSHADHI (Medicines) Many ayurvedic medicines are available for internal and external use without any side effects. These medicines reduces pain, stops bleeding and helps to shrink the swollen and buldged veins (Piles).
If this treatment followed correctly for minimum of three months patient gets relief from all the symptoms. If treated in time it prevents painful surgical intervention.
In Ayurveda for very severe cases KSHARA SUTRA (Medicated thread) is the non surgical treatment suggested which can be done on OPD basis.
After one month Reema visited clinic, this time she has got much relief from her suffering. I changed few medicines and asked her to follow diet and life style changes strictly. After three months when she visited she got complete relief and I could see her cute smiling face.
